Ben Turner
Associate Coach

Ben Turner is an associate coach with Cycle-Smart, a position he has held since 2003. Ben received a BS in Kinesiology from the College of William & Mary, then an MS in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2001. His time at CU was spent working on cycling performance research in the Applied Exercise Science laboratory.

Ben's research experience has included: testing the validity and reliability of the original Tune Power Tap; assessing the demands of national-level women's stage racing at the 2000 HP Women's Challenge; defining maximal sustainable power efforts in the laboratory; comparing the demands of men's and women's professional stage racing during the Tour de 'Toona; and examining the effect of cadence on uphill time trial performance.

As for racing, Ben has raced at the Expert level for mountain bikes, and Category 2 on the road. Since 1998, his favorite racing has been cyclo-cross, which he now focuses on exclusively. Cyclo-cross highlights include winning the Collegiate SuperCup title in 2000, 3rd place overall in the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-cross Series in 2003, and in 2004, several podium appearances in UCI events, racing some World Cups and Super Prestige races in Europe, and being selected to the US World Championships team.

Ben lives in Boulder, CO and works as the manager for Team TIAA-CREF, (the top under-25 development cycling program in the country) and Team 5280 Magazine, their Junior development team.

Ben is the primary author of the testing section, and also served as an overall editor and project consultant.
