RIP John Hughes

In the '80's, the movies of John Hughes, specifically Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, and Some Kind of Wonderful, made me feel less alone. Sure, his characters were caricatures and clichés, but that's exactly why they worked. I saw myself in John Cryer as Duckie, and my style in high school was absolutely affected by him and those glorious white creepers and highwaters All I ever wanted to do was drive away in a Karmann Ghia with Molly Ringwald as Andie. And I'm sure my attraction to dykie girls must have started with Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts, and continues to this day.

And while Chicago's not my hometown, has there ever been a better love story made for a city than Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

You wanna know my thing?

If I really have it solid for a girl,

I'll ride by her house on my bike.

I'll do it, like, a hundred times in a day.

It's really... it's intense.
