Okay, so explain a 120 min IPA. I get the APA/IPA difference. Where in the brewing process does the 2hrs come in? And yes, blowing momey you won on beer shows that you have your priorities straight. Now go buy Janice something!
I thought you didn't do hoppy bitter beer? granted, the Dogfish Head's aren't truly hop-bombs, qua West Coast IPA Style - they simply can't be what with all that malt backbone - but the 120 easily surpasses the 90 in its bitterness. did you taste the grapefruit and and smell a little melon? good stuff. did you like it? in the initial hopping, they have this conveyor system where hops are continuously added for 120 minutes. they then dry hop later for aroma. have you found any Russian River's in your beeranderings?
I don't like really bitter stuff, but I'm not averse to trying all the crafty brews out there. Lucky for me our friend and team mate Fatty(ironic rugy nickname) is the local beer distributer and has a keen taste for such. I like the Magic Hat HIPA, which is a little hoppier than most. The russian river is intriguing, I'll locate that btw travels while I'm in the village. We tend to measure things against the best, fat tire for more mellow brew and chimay gran reserve because it is ridiculously amazing. great textures and layers of flavors. I've spent the last week in a town bereft of good bookstores, cycling and decent beer. To say I can't wait to get home is an understatement. To quote one of your earlier posts, this town is all about the approximation of the experience instead of the real thing. back to reality for me.
Man some friends took us to a place in MD where they had a Dogfish "Hopinator" that was, for lack of a better descriptor, a hop-filled "bong" that they filtered selected beers through as they pulled the brew. That was pretty interesting, they had the DF 90 IPA running through it at that point, and the contrast (to the bottled 90 IPA) was pretty interesting: definitely more bitter, but mixed with a "fresh flower" taste that counteracted the bitterness to some degree... Kinda novel, if you get the chance! Re: Russian River, I've been thinking about their "Consecration" that one of the local shops has on hand. On the other hand, it's pretty pricey, even for "two" beers. Adam, maybe you should take some of that cash and grab one if you get a chance? After you buy Janice something, of course... I'm thinking about grabbing two, one to "cellar" (or garage, hey...) and one for either my birthday, or post-Bend... Although I'm kinda hoping Deschutes has something tricky up its sleeve at that time, it just seems right...
A week off beer? Oh wait, he means a week off from racing, so more beer. That's better. I haven't had a whole week off from beer since I was 19. But that might explain why at my best I was just a middle of the pack Cat 3 who couldn't climb. The Mayflower IPA is pretty good, a lot like Harpoon. I like both for the summer time, but the greenness seems a little too much in the colder weather. The Dogfish beers are hoppier and maybe a little more complex, but I just can't justify dropping the cash for their four beers for the price of six packaging. Drink well and race hard. Or vice versa if you can pull it off.
